Event description

Description

Pandora Productions and Ky Black Rep Theatre proudly collaborate to bring you a staged reading about the iconic Kentucky legend, Sweet Evening Breeze by Larry Muhammad. The Staged Reading is sponsored by Lisa Osanka and Carla F. Wallace with special support from The Snowy Owl Foundation. Proceeds will benefit the Sweet Evening Breeze LGBTQ Youth Shelter!

A drag queen goes undercover to trap a gay predator exploiting student athletes for a betting scam in SWEET EVENING BREEZE, an exuberant new musical based on the legendary James Herndon, swish queen of the Bluegrass. Affectionately referred to as “Sweets”, he is a beloved hospital orderly by day and carefully protects his reputation as an upstanding citizen.

By night Sweets headlines the popular drag revue Creole Follies and is in a long-term relationship with his stage manager and sidekick, Homer. Sweets attends church regularly and cleverly wins over an antigay preacher, Rev. West, hired as hospital chaplain, baiting him to officiate at a lesbian couple’s wedding. Offered big money to entertain at a private party for Mr. Jimmy, wealthy booster of college football notorious for seducing players, Sweets self-righteously turns him down but learning that police suspect Mr. Jimmy of blackmailing athletes to fix games for gambling, Sweets consents to performs at the party and becomes a secret informant.
