Event Details

The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is network of more than 40,000 women working or studying in the various disciplines in the field of engineering and technology. Founded in 1950, SWE has supported women to aspire, advance, and achieve in their careers as engineers and technologists.

SWE invites you to a workshop and discussion on Gender Bias in India, in Bangalore, India. The workshop will be hosted by General Motors India Technical Centre on Friday, January 11th, 2019.

Join SWE Executive Leaders Karen Horting, Executive Director and CEO; Peter Finn, Deputy Executive Director and Chief Learning Officer; and Jennifer Scott, VP of Strategic Partnerships.

Overview of Workshop:

SWE conducted a nationwide survey of almost 700 engineers to identify the existence of bias patterns in India’s engineering workplace. The study provides insight into the gender bias experiences of Indian engineers working for Western engineering companies. By recognizing the existence of bias in the workplace, we can begin to address the impacts these biases have on individuals within the company and make changes to improve workplace outcomes.

SWE will provide a brief overview of the bias patterns explored in this research and a summary of the survey results. Through interactive discussion, workshop participants will have the opportunity to offer their reactions to the research and share their personal experiences with bias. Recommendations for mitigating bias in the workplace will also be discussed.

At this event, workshop participants will learn to identify bias patterns in their own workplaces and ways to combat bias. As a valued partner within the SWE community we look forward to a rich dialogue about how we can continue to advance and engage women in engineering and technology.
