Event description

Description

Each year, our People Helping People Gala raises awareness and funds for a specific condition or cause of poverty. This year, we're raising $50,000 to fund suicide prevention services and programs, with an emphasis on preventing farmer suicides. The gala is a business-casual event, attended by positive, passionate and motivated people who help us carry out our anti-poverty mission.

Wisconsin had a record number of suicides in 2018; most in predominantly rural counties. Several factors contribute to increased suicide risk among rural farm families: social isolation, a culture of self-reliance that eschews asking others for help, a shortage of mental health resources and support services, and ready access to lethal means.

We know the health of rural communities is linked with farmer wellbeing. Recent events, including historic rain, trade disputes and declining global dairy markets, have exacerbated farm uncertainties. Since 2013 net farm incomes for U.S. farmers have declined 50%. Wisconsin farmers led the nation in farm bankruptcies for the past 3 years. There has been a 49% decrease in the number of Wisconsin dairy farms over the past 15 years. Studies show that these sorts of stressors can increase the risk for suicidal ideation. Creating resilient rural communities in light of these challenges takes all of us working collaboratively to build strong networks of support in the face of seemingly overwhelming obstacles.

Join us as we honor our Community Action award winners, enjoy a fun and purposeful evening of music and food, and raise funds to help prevent farmer suicides.
