Event description

Join us Saturday, June 10th, 2017 for an intensive day of learning VR! In our workshop, you’ll build a VR Funhouse, a project in which you experiment with physics in virtual reality with the Unity game engine. Starting from scratch, you’ll learn the basics of Unity to create a VR project, understand the subtleties of a great experience, and walk away with a working demo you can easily extend. You'll also get to know a community of VR devs and learn how to bootstrap your own VR projects.

During the workshop, you will:

  • Learn the fundamentals of Unity

  • Use HTC Vives and Oculus Rifts to test your projects

  • Get access to nearly every VR experience to play during down time (seriously, we have almost everything!)

  • Have food and drinks

You'll learn to:

  • Navigate the Unity Interface

  • Color and Build 3D Scenes

  • Utilize the SteamVR SDK

  • Implement Teleportation and Throwing

  • Interact with Unity Physics

  • Grasp the Do’s and Don’ts of VR

  • Rapidly Prototype VR Projects

You'll leave with:

  • A VR Funhouse project which you can show off and build upon

  • A stronger understanding of how to use Unity to create your own VR projects

  • A new network of friends and colleagues who are passionate about VR

  • Experience to follow along with the FusedVR Livestreams and tutorials

Requirements for this course:

  • A computer with Unity 5 installed (Macs are acceptable).

  • A mouse with a scroll wheel is highly recommended (Trust us, it makes a world of a difference.)

  • A basic understanding of programming (If you have never done programming before, we recommend the Udacity Intro to Programming Nanodegree)

  • If you feel comfortable with the code snippet below (it's pseudo-code, not Unity C#), you should be ready to rock!

Introductions and Unity Basics: 10:00AM - 12:30 PM

  • Meet the SVVR team, your teachers, and the devs you’ll be building with.

  • Learn the basics of Unity including how to navigate the editor and build basic objects.

  • Add assets to make our starter project your own.

  • Integrate SteamVR with your project and try what you build in virtual reality.

  • Learn how to interact with objects and teleport around in virtual reality.

Building Great VR: 4PM - 6PM

  • Bring your project to life by injecting your own code in Unity.

  • Learn and experience the core principles behind building great VR content.

  • Personalize your project and get feedback from your teachers and fellow devs.
