The Heart of the Glens Landscape Partnership Scheme in partnership with The Causeway Coast and Glens Heritage Trust and The Irish UNESCO Global Geoparks Committee are holding a three-day conference in The Marine Hotel Ballycastle Co Antrim from 13th -15th November 2019. The theme of the conference is “Partnerships, Resilience and Legacy”

The conference will host keynote speakers from the UK and Ireland the underlaying theme of partnership is to demonstrate how working in partnership can deliver sustainable heritage tourism. Site visits and workshops will provide inspiration and opportunities for dialogue and leave a lasting legacy for the area.

Wednesday 13th November

The conference is being officially launched at 7pm with representatives from Causeway Coast and Glens and Mid and East Antrim Borough Councils. The key speaker is Joan Crawford, Failte Ireland; Programme Manager with The Wild Atlantic Way. Joan’s presentation on the progress and development of the global brand will be followed an by “armchair conversation” with BBC presenter Bara Best, including Q&A from the audience. The evening launch is open to the public.

We finish with a show case of one of most successful cultural heritage projects supported by The Heart of Glens....The Glens of Antrim Story Telling Festival.

Thursday 14th November

The conference continues on with a welcome from Marie Cowan (Director of Geological Survey NI) and Koen Verbruggen (Director of Geological Survey Ireland). The conference’s key note speakers Jim Dixon (The National Lottery Heritage Fund), Harold Goodwin (Professor of Sustainable Tourism at Manchester Metropolitan University) and Teresa O’Hare (Manager of the Heart of the Glens) aim to inspire and give food for thought. There are options for site visits including a visit to Murlough Bay renowned location for igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, resilient farm diversification projects and habitat enhancement sites. .

Thursday afternoon continues with a focus on developing action through themed workshops, with calls to action arising from workshop discussions.

• Workshop No 1: The role of Geoparks in heritage and landscape-based tourism; led by Dr Kirstin Lemon

• Workshop No2: Resilience by the Community for the Community; Led by Gregar Fulton - Woodland Trust

• Workshop No3: Sustainable Approaches to Tourism in the Causeway Coast and Glens area. Led by Ester Dobbin - National Trust

Alongside our Thursday workshops a heritage marketplace will take place in the Marine Hotel Library between 2pm and 6.00pm. Stands will include local and regional heritage groups and organisations. It will be open for the public and for delegates to enjoy, mingle and browse.

The conference dinner begins with a local food and drinks tasting reception: “Taste The Causeway Coast & Glens” giving delegates a unique opportunity to sample the food from award winning Food NI providers of the area. As delegates tantalise their taste buds, they have the opportunity to enjoy a live performance of music and song written, recorded and performed by young people from Ballycastle Comhaltas, recipients of support from the Heart of the Glens LPS. Dinner using local ingredients will round off the conference, with some visual accounts of the Heart of the Glens Landscape partnership in action between courses.

Finally, for those with energy left Ballycastle town (on your conference doorstep) awaits you; offering after dinner entertainment.

Friday 15th November

On Friday the conference finishes with two unique events

• Irish Geoparks Forum will take place in the Portnagree House(opposite the harbour), hosted by UNESCO Global Geoparks Committee.

• UK Landscape Partnership Scheme meeting in Marine Hotel hosted by National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Attendees of these events and other delegates, have the option to visit the world-famous Giants Causeway. A light lunch will be provided at The Causeway Hotel
