Event description

Description

Understanding and managing legal risks has never been more important for sustainable farmers. Now, with Farm Commons’ Sustainable Farm Law 101 workshops, gaining such understanding has never been easier!

Sustainable Farm Law 101 will help you learn to choose and form the right business entity for your farm, address often difficult employment law issues, create effective land leases and sales contracts, work effectively with insurance agents, and manage food safety liability risks, whether for on-farm events or at farmers' markets. Co-facilitated by an attorney and Ariel Pressman of Seed to Seed Farm, Sustainable Farm Law 101 offers a collaborative, engaging workshop that will empower you to build a stronger, more resilient farm in your community!

This workshop will empower direct-to-consumer farmers to move forward on the legal issues that directly impact their operations:

  • Business organization: What business entity is right for you? How can you take advantage of the protections a business entity offers?
  • Workers: How can you navigate through workers' compensation, minimum wage, and other laws? Can you have interns and volunteers? What if the workers you hire live on-farm?
  • Food Safety: Do the new FSMA rules apply to your operation? How can you manage risks of foodborne illness outbreaks? What insurance is right for your enterprise?
  • Land Matters: Should you lease or purchase land? Do you need to get the lease in writing? Who pays for improvements? Do you have protections if your lease is terminated?
  • Sales and Contracts: How can you secure long-lasting, trusting relationships with the people who sell your food? How do you deal with large distributors who want you to sign boilerplate contracts?
  • Events and Agritourism: Will local zoning laws prevent your from hosting events? How accessible do your on-farm events need to be? Do you need to charge sales taxes for value-added products you sell at farmers’ markets?

Don't miss this collaborative, energetic, and informative workshop. Together, we can build strong sustainable farms! Lunch will be provided. This event is FREE and open to aspiring, new, and experienced farmers alike so RSVP to reserve your spot today!
