Sustainability & the Living Roof at the Academy of Sciences (MLF)
Friday, November 15, 2013 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM (PST)
San Francisco, CA
Frank Almeda, Ph.D., Senior Curator and McAllister Chair of Botany, California Academy of Sciences
Among the largest natural history and living sciences centers in the world and designed by Architect Renzo Piano, the California Academy of Sciences (CAS) transformed the old Academy building into a fascinating artistic, scientific, botanical, environmental and educational complex with a natural landscape and a five-acre living roof referred to as a park within Golden Gate Park. Join Frank for an "insider's tour" of CAS. We will learn about environmental activities, research and how the construction of the new California Academy of Sciences was informed by the Academy's commitment to the environment and sustainability. His presentation will cover the planning and implementation of the new living roof at the CAS; the changes implemented since the inauguration as well as the unexpected surprises that have occurred since the building was completed.
Frank will discuss the challenges of planning and building; operating this complex and unique structure:, the many environmental benefits; the roof and gardens; the expectations and challenges; and the many ways it is being used for sustainability as well as for public exhibits, living classrooms and space to conduct research on a dynamic, evolving complex of building, grounds and roof. Recognized worldwide as a distinguished scientist, researcher, educator and writer, Almeda will share 30 years of experiences and insights.
