Company stakeholders are increasingly focused on sustainability, which includes environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues, as well as corporate social responsibility. Whether facing ESG-based shareholder resolutions, feeling increasing pressure from customers regarding sustainable business practices, or trying to attract and retain an engaged social-minded work force, successful companies recognize the importance of sustainability to maintain a competitive advantage, reduce risk and drive profits.

Join our panel of experts on Thursday, March 22nd as we discuss “Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility”. Our speakers will provide an overview of the increased awareness of and focus on sustainability, ESG, and corporate social responsibility for a business. They will also address what companies can do to create and build value with sustainability best practices. Our speakers will share practical advice you can implement in your organization.

About Our Speakers

Nancy Cleveland, CEO and Co-Founder, Sustrana

Nancy S. Cleveland is the CEO and co-founder of Sustrana LLC, a sustainability management software and consulting company. Nancy provides consulting services and leads content development for Sustrana’s online sustainability management software, which enables businesses to manage and realize performance improvements through sustainability best practices. Nancy co-chairs the Governance and Sustainability sub-committee of the American Bar Association's Business Law Section. She is an accredited FSA (SASB) and LEED® AP, and is trained in GRI reporting and as a TSC Service Provider.

Jamie Rantanen, Senior Vice President, U.S. Trust

Jamie Rantanen is a Senior Vice President and Institutional and Private Client Advisor at U.S. Trust, Bank of America Private Wealth Management, in Philadelphia. Jamie works closely with regional and national private, non-profit, and institutional clients to distill their financial needs and objectives, pursuing those priorities with efficiency across the U.S. Trust and Bank of America platforms.

Specifically experienced and deeply knowledgeable about Impact Investing, Jamie believes strongly in helping clients understand the “impact” of their investments relative to their values and concerns. He is also adept in incorporating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) thematic investing within customized programs that identify risk and return opportunities across asset classes, as well as social and environmental impacts and outcomes.

Jamie has extensive experience consulting to entrepreneurs, high net worth clients and family offices, endowments and foundations, non-profit organizations, and large institutions. Prior to joining U.S. Trust, he was Head of ESG and Sustainable Investments at Deutsche Bank Asset Management, Americas. In this capacity, he led the development and implementation of the firm’s ESG and strategic Sustainable Investing initiatives in the United States and served as its primary representative to clients, the marketplace, and media. For the prior 17 years, he led private wealth management teams at Deutsche Bank and UBS, both in Philadelphia. He began his wealth management career in 1998 at Smith Barney after three years in its Institutional Equity division.

Jamie holds a B.A. in Political Science from Kenyon College, where he was a member of the lacrosse team, and is a graduate of the Haverford School. He lives in Haverford, Pennsylvania, with his wife Jackie and two sons, and is a former board member of the Wellness Community of Philadelphia and past president and board member of the Anglers Club of Philadelphia.

Dave Stangis, Chief Sustainability Officer, VP Corporate Responsibility, Campbell Soup

Dave Stangis serves as Vice President-Corporate Responsibility and Chief Sustainability Officer for Campbell Soup Company. He reports to Denise Morrison, President and Chief Executive Officer.

Dave designs Campbell's corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainability strategies, goals, policies, and programs. He leads the Company’s strategies and external engagement related to CSR Strategy, Responsible Sourcing, Sustainable Agriculture, and Operational Sustainability. Working closely with other senior leaders, he advances Campbell's operational and communication strategies in these areas.

Dave has helped the company achieve its place on the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes, the 100 Best Corporate Citizens List, World’s Most Sustainable Corporations and recognition as one of the World's Most Ethical Companies.

Dave joined Campbell as Vice President-CSR and Sustainability in September 2008. In 2011, his role was expanded to include oversight of Community Affairs and the Campbell Soup Foundation. From 2011 to 2016, he led the Community Affairs Organization and served as President of the Campbell Soup Foundation.

Since 2016, Dave has been an Entrepreneur in Residence and Senior Fellow in Social Innovation at Babson College. Previously, Dave worked for 12 years at Intel, where he created and led the corporate responsibility function.

In 2008 and 2013, Dave was named one of the 100 Most Influential People in Business Ethics by Ethisphere Magazine. Trust Across America named Dave one of the Top 100 Thought Leaders in Trustworthy Business Behavior for 4 years in a row. He serves/has served on the boards of Graham Sustainability Institute at the University of Michigan, Net Impact, The University of Detroit Mercy College of Business, Sustainable Brands, and the United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey.

Dave earned his B.S. degree from the University of Detroit, his M.S. degree in occupational and environmental health from Wayne State University, and his M.B.A. degree from the University of Michigan.

Bennett Thomas, Senior Vice President of Finance and Sustainability, Hersha Hospitality Trust

Bennett Thomas serves as the Senior Vice President of Finance & Sustainability with Hersha Hospitality Trust (NYSE: HT), a $2.5 billion Real Estate Investment Trust with 51 upscale, upper upscale and luxury hotels in gateway markets including New York City, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Boston, Miami, and Los Angeles.

Over the past 10 years with Hersha, his corporate finance responsibilities have included strategic planning, evaluation of M&A opportunities, investor relations, $2.5 billion of debt and equity capital raising, and portfolio sale transactions including the $570 million Manhattan portfolio sale to overseas investors. Bennett also works closely with the Acquisitions, Asset Management and Hotel Operations teams to drive portfolio profitability. In Bennett’s Sustainability capacity, he founded EarthView, a sustainability platform utilized at over 100 hotel properties that has created $50 million of portfolio value. The financial returns are achieved through targeted reductions in energy, water and waste thereby decreasing the Company’s environmental footprint. Social impact returns are also paramount. Bennett is responsible for establishing one of the first hotel management partnerships with Clean the World, an organization that distributes soap in developing countries to combat hygiene related deaths. He also created a partnership with Water.org to support micro-lending programs in developing countries. EarthView’s sustainability efforts have been nationally recognized by the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts (NAREIT) – EarthView is four-time winner of their Leader in the Light Award for the Lodging & Resorts sector.

Prior to Hersha, Bennett was a Senior Manager with Medco, a Fortune 50 healthcare company, where he focused on strategic initiatives including acquisitions totaling $2.5 billion. Bennett was also a Fund Manager with BR Ventures, a seed-stage venture capital fund affiliated with Cornell University. Bennett started his career as a Consultant with Ernst & Young where he focused on strategy and process re-engineering. Bennett received his B.S. in Civil-Environmental Engineering with honors from Virginia Tech and graduated as a Park Leadership Fellow from the Johnson School MBA program at Cornell University. He has also been recognized as a Philadelphia 40 under 40 award recipient. Bennett continues to stay active in the Cornell community as a guest lecturer for the Sustainable Global Enterprise Immersion program, head of collegiate recruiting for Hersha Hospitality Trust, member of the Cornell Sustainable Hospitality roundtable, and as an advisory board member of the Cornell Institute for Healthy Futures.
