Event description
Learn about the different career paths in the green economy by participating in the Sustainability Ambassador Leadership Program

About this event

Interested in learning about careers in sustainability in the California market? Consider taking the Sustainability Ambassador Leadership Program, presented by Green Education Inc.--an 8-week program where students will be introduced to various career paths in the green economy.

Whether the class is on:

· ENERGY

· ZERO WASTE and the CIRCULAR ECONOMY

· GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE and WATER CONSERVATION

· URBAN AG and COMPOSTING or

· a DATE with an ORGANIZER

each class gives participants a glimpse into the work being done by professionals to make our city, and world, more environmentally, economically, and equitably sustainable and resilient.

Classes will be conducted weekly, for 2 hours, via Zoom and led by a professional working in the aforementioned industries here in California. The program aims to support participants in their goals to enter the sustainability job market more equipped, being better stewards of the environment, and becoming leaders in their communities advocating for systems change and better use of natural resources so that we, as a society, might move more quickly towards mitigating the climate crisis.

Course Agenda:

Session 1 Sustainability 101: An introduction to the program and sustainability with a brief overview on the different subjects we will cover during the duration of the program. Details on leadership project requirements will be shared at this class as well.

Session 2 Zero Waste and Circular Economy: Recycling has long been thought to be the solution to what we toss out at the curb even though decades since its inception, the nation can only boast a 30% average recycling rate and only 9% of any plastic ever made actually being recycled. Hear tonight’s industry professional talk about the concept of zero waste and the circular economy-- a whole systems approach to waste..

Session 3 Green Infrastructure & Water: A water conservation professional will discuss ways you can save on water at home or at work, as well as cover how their profession affects local water saving efforts

Session 4 Urban Ag + Composting: A professional will discuss the benefits of urban agriculture, cover local urban ag efforts in Long Beach and the surrounding cities, while covering their own work in this industry. The professional will share the link between urban agriculture and a robust composting system and discuss compost’s role in climate change mitigation. Participants will also learn about home methods of composting.

Session 5 Energy Efficiency Pt. 1: U.S. buildings alone are responsible for more annual CO2 emissions than any other country. Hear from a professional that will show you how transforming the built environment to be more energy efficient can play a major role in reducing the threat of climate change. You will also learn how to reduce energy consumption in your own home!

Session 6: Energy Efficiency Pt 2: We will cover how solar can be a gateway to buildings becoming net-zero (creating enough energy to not pull from the utility grid) and what professionals are doing in their field to bring solar to homes in California. The second part will discuss how you can research what jobs are available in the energy, non profit, water, utility, and other job sectors.

Session 7 Date with an Organizer: A professional working in the local non-profit sector will discuss environmental equity, how you can be an advocate in your neighborhood for environmental equity, and what you can do to organize and influence elected officials to push sustainable practices forward.

Session 8 Leadership Project: Now it’s time to share with those around you! As a new Sustainability Ambassador, you will be equipped with great information on how to lessen your environmental impact. In this class, participants will give an overview of the act of service or outreach project (large or small) the entire class is planning to deliver somewhere in the City. (Details on creating this project will be shared at first class “Sustainability + Resilience + Equity 101” and worked on throughout the program.)

After these classes, you will learn:

The vast types of work that fit under the umbrella of sustainability

What is takes to enter sustainable industries

How to research what jobs are available in these respective industries

Ways to be more sustainable at home

By purchasing a ticket for this class, you will have registered for all 8 classes for the program. As stated before, these are 2 hour sessions, being held once a week starting Thursday, September 16th, 2021. If you have any questions on the class, feel free to email marcia@greenedu.org.
