About this Event

Stocion-x Sussex is one of a series of events happening all over the world in conjection with Stoic Week. You can find more information about both at modernstoicism.com.

Stoicon-X events are sort of like TED-X events – smaller local events organized to bring engagement, conversation, and discussion of Stoicism to a number of other communities around the world. This year, we are hosting the first event at the University of Sussex and the only event outside of London!

The day will involve some talks in the morning followed by some smaller group workshops in the afternoon, all aimed at exploring how the ancient philosophy of Stoicism might be useful for students (and anyone) in their lives today.

The event is generously hosted by the The Student of Life Café, Sussex Philosophy Department, Sussex Philosophy Society, and is supported by the University Chaplaincy.

Attendance is free but please register here as spaces are limited. We look forward to see you at this event which also marks the lauch of the Student of Life Café!

Why attend the Student of Life Cafe?

Students are increasingly reporting higher rates of stress at university. This event has the principal objective of helping students become “World Ready”. The concept, is defined as …”Being ‘World Ready’  is having the inner strength, interpersonal skills and resilience, in an increasingly complex world, to be the best version of myself I can be – every day I want to feel World Ready!” (Stephen De-Wint, National Executive Director, The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, Canada).

Using the opportunity offered by hosting a Stoic-X event, we aim to help students on their pathway to be more empowered, resilient and better prepared to become world ready.

In addition, research shows that students experience anxiety not only from academic workload but also from concerns about their future careers and getting a good job after university. There is research that shows that recent graduates face significant ‘shock’ adapting to the world of work. It is our belief that the university experience can better provide sufficient opportunities to develop lifelong skills, world readiness to not just succeed but also be resilient and thrive in life after university.

Why apply stoic practice at university?

An excellent article on Forbes presents five reasons why stoicism matters today.

Like the practice of mindfulness and meditation, stoicism offers a range of tools, practices and timeless insights to empower people to make small, incremental improvements in their own lives. Stoicism has been embraced by some of the leading figures of the past and modern times including Tim Ferriss, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, Theodore Roosevelt, Warren Buffett, and Bill Gates
