ABSTRACT:

Suspension bridges around the world form some of the most iconic, memorable and most recognizable infrastructure ever created. This includes but not limited to the Brooklyn Bridge, NY and Golden Gate Bridge, CA. Yet this awe inspiring structures have to endure some of the harshest environments which degrade their durability while at the same time having to safely carry the heavy loads of modern traffic. This talk offers a brief history on the development of the modern suspension bridge form, the methods of construction and protection. It also offers a unique view of what is happening inside the main cable of a suspension bridge, inspection methods and also rehabilitation methods in order to extend their service life for several years to come. The presentation is based on AECOM’s complex bridge practice expertise drawing examples and experience across the US and UK.
