Event Details

Japanese Blowfish (aka Fugu aka Pufferfish) is one of the most celebrated and notorious dishes in Japan. It is very seasonal, and only available in the winter months. We will source 3 fish for an evening of discussion, and different taste preparations including sashimi. This is a one-time, small-group event, and will take place in our Demonstration Kitchen.

What to expect:

Chef Nobu Yamazaki, Michelin Star Chef and co-owner of the iconic Sushi Taro will discuss Fugu's deadly history, its mystique, folklore, biology, sourcing, and various preparation techniques, all while breaking down the fish live in a small group setting.

Laura Hayes, Food Editor for Washington City Paper, will facilitate the discussion during this unique event and will assist with an interactive Q&A throughout.

Guests will enjoy rare dishes such as soup made from dried Fugu fin, and sashimi. Other traditional bites will include Sushi Taro's chicken yakitori, Japanese-vegetable yakitori, and a variety of onigiri, courtesy of Mess Hall's newest Member Maker, Kombini Onigiri.

Unlimited Kirin Ichiban lager is included (please drink responsibly). If you require a gluten-free alcohol option please contact us so that we may make an alternate accommodation.

This is a 21+ event.

Consuming raw or undercooked foods (meats, poultry, seafood, shellfish, or eggs) may increase your risk of foodborne illness, especially if you have certain medical conditions.

Sushi Taro's Pufferfish will be responsibly sourced through the Torafugu Buyer's Association. This event's preparations are safe for consumption because of the licensed sourcing and expert preparation, however, you should never attempt to source or prepare fugu at home, due to the associated risk of death. This is NOT a "how-to" class.
