Redefining Black Love,” the first of its kind for Silence Kills, will be a night of nostalgia, community, poetry, networking and a celebration of what it means to know Love. Specifically, Black love. Black love has a toxic connotation to it, due to generational curses, media, and mis-guidance. We want to celebrate what Black love really is in all of its glory.

This will be a very sexy, sophisticated, and empowering event for those who believe in the power of Black love. There will be a live DJ serenading you with music while you have a chance to network with like-minded individuals. While you mingle, we will be providing you Hors D'oeuvre handcrafted by thee Open Crumb catering business, a Black owned scratch kitchen located in the heart of Anacostia.

In the midst of this lovely event, DC’s JusPaul will be hosting our poetry open mic. The night’s feature will be The Lover of Words (TLoW).

  • Juspaul: JusPaul’s career has been widely recognized in numerous reviews of his music and live performances as a solo artist igniting stages and as well as his impressive vocal and lyrical talents on his many recorded releases and sought after collaborations. JusPaul was recently voted winner of syndicated radio station WPGC-FM’s “Verses & Flows” competition, the Titan Arts Awards of D.C.’s 2017 “Best Male Vocalist of the Year,” and signed to a distribution deal with Priority Records. His solid foundation in live performances supports his mission to not merely entertain but to educate and continue to inspire youth to pursue their creativity through a musical experience. JusPaul’s musical talents are unrestricted by genres, thus his stage moniker, the most apt description of the musical experience he provides – “it’s JusPaul!”
  • Shelina Farmer poetically known as TLoW: The Lover Of Words is an emerging DMV artist and poet. TLoW’s poetic performance and unique heartfelt subject matter is immersive and reminiscent of one’s own life experience. TLoW’s ability to poetically recite what most feel but can't quite express is healing and is the foundation of what sets her apart artistically. TLoW has graced Poetry stages in DC, Maryland, Baltimore and Philadelphia and has been featured At Mackey Solo’s Encore, Orville The Poets Poetry and Pancakes, Nerd The Poet Productions, King and Eye Life Podcast, Busboys And Poets and many more. TLow also partnered with Eleven-Eleven Studios to curate and promote local artistry and poetic talent virtually during the 2021 pandemic.

Your ticket (early bird ticket $20, regular $35, $50 at the door) includes access to all of the above: entry, food, open mic and open bar. All proceeds from this event will be used to continue hosting events for the Silence Kills: Surviving Through the Arts Series. More information on this series on our website.
