The survival basics class is designed for students that don't have the time to take off for our 5 day standard, but still want to learn the minimum survival skills for being lost in the woods. We take the most important elements out of the Survival Standard and condense the class to the "core three" priorities. There is also an introduction to Body bio mechanics, to help you learn to navigate the wilderness with efficient movement, which prevents mechanical injuries. Your first priorities in a "lost in the woods" scenario, are always shelter, fire, water. The survival basics class will cover these three topics in depth, so you can be prepared for the worst.
The first day of the survival basics class, will begin with proper body movement. We will dive into the most efficient ways to conquer different types of terrain on foot. You will learn to use the proper muscle groups at the correct time, so you save calories and energy, prevent water loss, and injuries. Dr. John Hutchison, DC, FASA has been chosen to provide this knowledge in the survival basics class. These things are a total game changer in a survival scenario.
During early morning, we will take you through the steps of building primitive shelters. We will show you how to build a shelter, that will keep you warm and dry. You will learn proper placement of the framework, proper thickness and height of debris insulation, and proper waterproofing techniques.
Day 1 afternoon, will cover fire. We will teach several fire methods in the survival basics class. You will learn friction fire, how to make an all night fire, and a below the ground fire. Fire is of the utmost importance in a survival situation. It provides you a way to filter or boil water, cook food, all while keeping you warm, and preventing hypothermia. Fire will carry over into the second part of Day 2 of the survival basics class.
The beginning of Day 2 of the survival basics class, you will learn water procurement and filtration. This will include hiking to a water source, and being shown how to filter the water. Hydration is key in a survival situation. Without proper hydration, your body can overheat, and you will lose energy quickly. However, it is also important to make sure you're ingesting clean water. Clean water prevents exposure to bacteria and/or organisms, that can leave you very sick, which may further complicate a survival situation. Possibly leaving you unable to perform tasks that are a must. Day 2 will end with self rescue techniques, and of course, your feedback and a review of all we've covered.
It is our hopes that after attending this class you will be able to provide for your most basic survival needs should you ever become stranded in the wilderness.
Minimum Gear Needed:
- Overnight camping gear to include shelter and sleeping bag.
- Fixed Blade Full Tang Knife
- Folding Saw
- Food (Plenty of time will be given to prepare meals on site)
- Outdoor clothing and wet weather gear
- Insect Repellant
