Event description

Description

The Creagh College Parent Council are delighted to offer the opportunity to parents to attend a workshop with Enda Murphy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapist and author of "Flagging the Screenager" on Wednesday the 29th November. Enda's presentation will focus on supporting ourselves and our children's emotional wellbeing. This workshop aims to provide practical insights, skills and support to parents for the achievement and maintenance of emotional wellness in themselves and their children as well as dealing with issues around teenagers and the length of time they spend on screens/phones/digital technology.

Rational for Workshop

Emotional Wellness is seen as one of the most crucial area’s that needs to be addressed in the community today. Learning the fundamentals of what emotional health is and how to develop emotional resilience is as important to healthy growth, as is learning and practicing physical health.

To manage their mental health and achieve emotional wellness , most people merely need two things; information and support. However information alone is not sufficient. Educational materials given to people with out support have shown to be ineffective. However if combined with guidance, coaching or facilitation then outcomes are extremely good.

The vast majority of people in the community can be helped to improve their emotional wellness through ‘low intensity’ educational workshops such as this. Most resources that are allocated to the provision of mental health care by the authorities are focused on providing funding and resources direct to health professionals.

What makes this workshop unique is that it focuses on providing education and appropriate skills training direct to parents, community leaders and teachers. This is an effective method of supporting our children as it utilizes relationships and support networks that are already established in the community.

The workshop has four principal learning aims:

  1. To facilitate emotional wellness and education of children through understanding the dynamics of mental health and emotional resilience.

  2. Simplify complex psycho dynamics into a jargon free format which is easy understood by parents.

  3. Identify complex mental health issues and put them into a simple framework from which specific problems can be identified.

  4. Provide practical skills, appropriate for parents and community leaders, which can be used when these problems are encountered in the workplace

This workshop is available to parents/guardians of students from Creagh College.
