About this event

PFLAG Cape Cod is proud to host the symposium "Supporting LGBTQ+ Students in Our Schools". Funded by a grant from the Gay and Lesbian Equity Fund of The Cape Cod Foundation, the event will take place on Wednesday, October 26th from 3:30-5:30 pm at the Cape Codder Resort & Spa in Hyannis.

The symposium will present educators and faculty from Cape and Islands schools with the knowledge they need to better understand and support LGBTQ+ students in their schools. For schools to provide a safe and welcoming environment, it's important for staff to be aware of laws and legal issues, concerns around bullying and safety, dealing with name changes and dress codes, and everything from what pronouns to use to which bathrooms can be accessed. And with legislative attacks against LGBTQ+ youth taking place nationwide, supporting these students has taken on even greater urgency.

Presenters and speakers will include Kimm Topping of the Massachusetts Department of Education's Safe Schools Program; State Senator Julian Cyr; State Representative Sarah Peake; Dirk Correia, PFLAG Cape Cod's GSA Outreach Ambassador; and a current LGBTQ+ high school student.

The symposium is open to 150 attendees and check-in begins at 3:00 pm, with light snacks and refreshments provided. The deadline to register is October 19th at 6:00 pm.
