Supporting End of Life Care, Grief, and Bereavement for People with IDD
This experiential two-day workshop will explore the supports that are needed to assist people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in understanding and participating in their end-of-life planning process. It will dispel commonly held myths about the abilities of people with IDD in understanding their rights to information when dealing with their own mortality or the loss of a loved one. The workshop will provide an overview of the forms and processes used to assist a person in planning for his/her end-of-life care. A comparative analysis of the plethora of religions and their practices for death and mourning will be explored. Commonalities and differences involved in the handling of this time of life will be highlighted. It will also increase clinicians’ and support professionals’ knowledge, which is valuable while assisting others in following the rituals associated with their spiritual practice.
