Event description

Description

This experiential two-day workshop will explore the supports that are needed to assist people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in understanding and participating in their end-of-life planning process. It will dispel commonly held myths about the abilities of people with IDD in understanding their rights to information when dealing with their own mortality or the loss of a loved one.

The workshop will provide an overview of the forms and processes used to assist a person in planning for his/her end-of-life care. A comparative analysis of the plethora of religions and their practices for death and mourning will be explored. Commonalities and differences involved in the handling of this time of life will be highlighted. It will also increase clinicians’ and support professionals’ knowledge, which is valuable while assisting others in following the rituals associated with their spiritual practice. Though the focus is on people with IDD, techniques learned can be readily used to support anyone in a variety of treatment locations.

At the end of this course, attendees will:

  • Understand the biopsychosocial process and needs of the dying person and effectively provide supports needed
  • Identify various ways that grief can manifest, particularly with people with IDD
  • Learn tips on setting up a Grief Support Team
  • Understand, support, and teach caregivers how to provide support, while grieving themselves
  • Be able to more comfortably supporting a dying person with their last wishes
