Description

Supporting Client Self-Determination

CoRe Speaker Series

Most conflict resolution professionals will encounter clients with mental health concerns, addictions, or physical limitations affecting decision-making. Many will also work with clients who have experienced individual or transgenerational trauma, often without recognizing its impacts on their participation in a process. Some professionals will also have occasion to support children’s participation in processes, or work with clients experiencing or planning for age-related health concerns, including dementia. In all of these circumstances and more, clients can be supported to participate in processes that will impact their lives.

In this session, we will explore approaches to support individuals who might otherwise be excluded from collaborative processes in participating effectively in decision-making that affects them.

Presenter Bio:

Sharon Sutherland is a mediator and conflict resolution trainer with experience across a wide range of subject areas, including child protection, civil litigation, and neighbour disputes. She will draw on her own experience and the voices of others in the conflict resolution world to offer a wide range of options for process adaptation to support client voice.

ATTENDANCE: The session will be held at KPMG’s downtown Vancouver office (777 Dunsmuir Street, 11th floor).

Registration is required.

LIVESTREAM: Link will be provided on May 14.

Attendance at the speaker series is free for CoRe series subscribers and volunteers, $20 for others. CoRe annual speaker series subscriptions are available for $50. This fee entitles subscribers to attend all Speaker Series events through December 2018 without additional fee.

CoRe Clinic is an approved continuing development provider for the Law Society of BC. Its Speaker Series events are pre-approved educational activities for professional development credit.
