Description

This is a Supernova ACTIVITY Day for Scouts working on meeting Requirement #4 of the Supernova Award - whether the Bronze (Dr Bernard Harris) or the Silver (Thomas Edison) - for this 2019-2020 school year.

This particular Supernova Technology Activity is for Scouts who are (a) students in Grades 7-12 for the 2019-2020 school year, and (b) First Class rank or higher.

Bronze Supernova Requirement #4: Complete TWO Supernova activity topics, one each in two different STEM areas.

A Supernova activity topic is a two-part, hands-on, high-level activity related to one of the STEM fields. Part 1 involves research, preparation, set up,coordination, and/or organization. Part 2 involves analysis and reflection, culminating in the creation of a report in any one of the available format options.

Silver Supernova Requirement #4: Complete TWO additional Supernova activity topics, one each in the two STEM areas NOT completed for the Harris Supernova Award. (Note: The intent is that upon completion of the Edison Supernova Award the Scout will have completed one Supernova activity topic in each of the four STEM areas.)

THE BERNARD HARRIS SUPERNOVA PROGRAM IS OPEN TO BSA SCOUTS WHO:

1) Are First Class Rank and higher.

2) Have earned 3 of 4 of the following NOVA Awards.

  • Science: Shoot! or Splash! or Let-It-Grow or Mendel’s Minions
  • Technology: Start Your Engines or Hello World
  • Engineering: Whoosh!
  • Mathematics: Designed-To-Crunch

3) Have earned the Scholarship Merit Badge.

THE THOMAS EDISON SUPERNOVA PROGRAM IS OPEN TO BSA SCOUTS WHO:

1) Have completed (submitted their application) the Bronze Supernova Dr Bernard Harris Award.

2) Have Earned 4 of 4 of the following NOVA Awards:

  • SCIENCE - Shoot or Splash or Let It Grow or Mendel’s Minions.
  • TECHNOLOGY - Start Your Engines or Hello World
  • ENGINEERING - Whoosh
  • MATHEMATICS - Designed To Crunch

  • Behind The Scenes Workshop (2.5 hours) with Technical Theatrical Team
  • Lunch (bring your own or $ to purchase at park)
  • SuperNova Program Meeting (1-2 hours)
  • Scouts can enjoy the park attractions until closing time at 6pm.

BEHIND THE SCENES WORKSHOP:

Scouts will experience some of the technical secrets of Hollywood - from Foley effects and motion capture photography and digital imagery. With the assistance of a professional theatrical team, scouts receive an in depth tour both backstage and on stage, and get a detailed view on how blockbuster movies are made.

NOTES - PLEASE READ:

1) Please Sign Up ELIGIBLE SCOUT in his/her name using Parents email address based on Scout’s estimated rank (First, Star, Life, Eagle) as of December 15, 2019.

2) Please check the email address (inbox or spam folder) used during the Eventbrite SignUp process on a regular basis as your response on behalf of your Scout is required at least ONCE on 10/15, 10/30, 11/15 or 11/30, and AGAIN on 12/30.

3) For youth protection and privacy, the locations of some of our meetings for the Supernova Award Program will only be shared to Eventbrite signups.

4) Scouts starting on the BRONZE Supernova will come in their Class A field uniform AND BRING the following:

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

  • The Bernard Harris SuperNova Program is Open to BSA Scouts who are at least First Class Rank from ANY COUNCIL by 11/02/2019, AND HAVE EARNED 3 of the 4 Nova Awards as listed: (1) SCIENCE (Shoot or Splash or Grow or Minions), (2j TECHNOLOGY (Start Your Engines), (3) ENGINEERING (Whoosh), and/or MATHEMATICS (Crunch) by DECEMBER 15, 2019.
  • The Thomas Edison Supernova Program is open to BSA Scouts who have submitted or will submit their Bronze Supernova Application by MAY 1, 2020.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

  • Parking starts at $25.00 per vehicle at the parking lot.
  • If taking the metro, disembark at Universal Studios.

What can I/my scout bring into the event?

  • Please see NOTES #4, NOTES #5, NOTES #6, and NOTES #7.

What's the refund policy?

  • NO REFUNDS.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

  • YES - to check in.

Is my registration fee or ticket transferrable?

  • NO.

Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?

  • NO. Scouts should be signed up using their name with their parents email address.
