Description

Join us for one, two or all three of our upcoming Sunday workshops.

Sunday, November 13th: Fall Brassica Planting

Sunday, December 11th: You Can Pickle That?!

Sunday, January 8th: Building Compost

Each workshop will have a mixture of 'classroom' time and hands-on learning.

Here's some more information about each workshop:

November/ Fall Brassica Planting: We'll dig into the basics of fall planting in San Diego's North County. The Brassica plant family includes plants like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, bok choi, and radish! This workshop will include class time with a handout featuring planting tips, varieties to grow, pest control, and plants to consider when intercropping. Participants will also get hands on experience preparing soil for transplanting and direct seeding of root crops. All participants must wear closed toed shoes, a sunhat and water are highly encouraged. Stay tuned for Coastal Roots workshop on pickling, where participants will look at making their favorite brassicas into healthy fermented food! We look forward to seeing you on the farm!

December/You Can Pickle That?! Got a bunch of brassicas growing now? We'll teach you an easy way to preserve your veggies! Lactofermentation is controlled decomposition: lactobacilli are lactic-acid producing bacteria which are on the skins of most vegetables. When we ferment we create the right environment for these bacteria to reproduce and proliferate. We'll discuss and practice creating the 'right environment' through seals, the use of salt, the temperature and time neeeded as well as the health benefits of eating lacto-fermented foods. We'll share recipes, harvest veggies, and practice making our own lactofermented pickles.

January/Building Compost: Need a way to dispose of the veggie scraps from all of those brassicas you've been fermenting? Come learn to compost! The Building Compost workshop will focus on the basic science of compost and touch upon a variety of composting methods. The workshop will involve a classroom component, an interactive tour of Coastal Roots Farm's various styles of composting, and a hands-on composting exercise. Participants will leave the workshop with a Compost 101 handout and the confidence and skillset to start composting at home! The hands-on component of the workshop will involve shoveling and most likely getting a little dirty. Please wear close-toed shoes and long pants and bring water and sunscreen."
