About this Event

Domestic violence impacts thousands of Kalamazoo County families each year. We can change that.

Summit on Trauma & Domestic Violence

October 2, 2019

Like nearly every community in the U.S., the most prevalent violent crime in Kalamazoo is domestic violence. Domestic violence cases in Kalamazoo County average roughly 1,000 per year, and an untold number go unreported.

Despite our Prosecuting Attorney's office obtaining convictions in domestic violence cases at a rate more than double the national average, and despite some of Michigan's most progressive problem-solving courts like drug court, sobriety court and mental health court, the recidivism rate for domestic violence offenders in Kalamazoo County is greater than 1 in 3. Our community is home to roughly 300 people who have committed three or more domestic violence offenses in the past three years and young adults and people of color are the most commonly affected. It's time for a change.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Join us on October 2 for this half-day Summit on Trauma and Domestic Violence to explore the connection between trauma and violence and to discuss how we can better support survivors, hold people accountable, and prevent future violence through treatment and healing. Speakers from the Kalamazoo County Prosecuting Attorney's office, YWCA of Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Defender, WMU Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine, the Children's Trauma Assessment Center at WMU, Open Doors Kalamazoo, Levine & Levine, Growth Works and more will discuss how the criminal justice system functions today for domestic violence cases, how trauma-informed treatment options can improve the system, and how a permanent, dedicated, Trauma & Resiliency Court in Kalamazoo County will prevent violence and transform lives in our community.

The Summit is an ideal professional engagement opportunity for practitioners in criminal justice, public health, mental health, social work, education, community advocacy and more. Participation in the Summit is free to the first 125 people to RSVP thanks to the generous support of the Allstate Foundation and Kellogg's. Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Please help spread the word by forwarding this message to anyone who might be interested in this subject. Thank you.
