Description

Contact youth@gbul.org if you have any questions or concerns.

We will have three workshops. PLEASE CHOOSE THE TICKET WITH THE WORKSHOP THAT YOU WILL LIKE TO ATTEND. CHOICES ARE NUMBERED BELOW.

*** NOTE: You will only have time to attend one workshop. If you choose more than 1 we will choose one workshop for you to attend***

1. Looking for Warning Signs- where we will be discussing how to find the warning signs of bullying, depression and insecurities in the youth that may lead to suicidal thoughts, as well as what adults and parents should do to take the appropriate steps to receive professional assistance for their children.

2. Baltimore Urban Debate League- You will be broken up in groups of 3-4. You will be handed information on how to come up with an argument and information on gun policies. You will then come up with an argument about gun control and policy in your groups and later present as a whole. This debate will act as a segway into our peer-led panel as well.

3. Police and Mental Health: This workshop will cover how police officers address those with mental disabilities and address the protocol that police officers follow during their interactions with those with mental illnesses. The workshop will allow the audience to have a better understanding on the types of training that officers have to go through, and how the officers implement the training they are given. The workshop’s format would start with a presentation created by the facilitator, and following will be a discussion with the workshop participants. Facilitators have the freedom however to add any other activities that will address this topic.

The Greater Baltimore Urban League’s Youth Executive Board presents, the Summit for Solutions, a summit focused on mental health and gun control in the surrounding communities in Baltimore City. The Youth Executive Board (YEB) of the Saturday Leadership Program have chosen this topic due to the increasing stigmas that surround mental health as well as the need of stricter gun laws. The summit will take place at the War Memorial Building on Saturday August 25, 2018 from 10:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. and is open to the general public.

The Summit aims to show the connection between mental health and gun violence and policy. We see gun violence as a result of lack of awareness of mental health. We aim to use Summit for Solutions as a safe space to discuss gun violence and mental illnesses in the Baltimore community. We will use comparisons of data, as well as provide information on proper health facilities and the solutions that they provide that can help those that suffer from mental disabilities.

The Summit for Solutions aims to reach those residing in Baltimore City. We hope that we will be able to provide to the community more education on mental health awareness in the black community. We also want to raise awareness on funding on mental health, so that the community can provide more services to those in need.
