Description

SUMMER FICTION INTENSIVE

Times: Tuesdays and Thursdays from July 18-August 10, 7pm - 9pm

Instructor: Tom Andes

Location: The NOCCA Institute annex, 2832 Royal Street

Tuition: $325

While we may be tempted to hibernate during the long New Orleans summers, the season can be a great time to challenge ourselves through new projects, or to make progress on ones we've already started. This class will stimulate beginning and advanced writers alike to produce new work through generative exercises, as well as the chance to receive supportive, specific feedback on works-in-progress. Our discussions will center on key points of craft: dialogue, exposition (or back story), setting, and how to get closer to your characters. Writers can expect to start one or two new stories, in addition to receiving constructive feedback on one complete story or novel excerpt.

REQUIREMENTS

No previous experience is required. Enrollment is limited to adults age 18 and older.

NOTE

A minimum number of students must enroll in this class for it to "make". If fewer students enroll than are necessary, the class will be cancelled and full refunds will be issued. If we have to cancel the class, we'll make every effort to notify students at least one week before the first class meeting.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Tom Andes received his MFA from San Francisco State University and recently attended the Kenyon Review Writer’s Workshop. His work has appeared in journals including Witness, Natural Bridge, Xavier Review, and Blue Earth Review, and has been anthologized in Best American Mystery Stories 2012. He has received residencies at the Vermont Studio Center and the Ragdale Foundation for the Arts, and he frequently contributes book reviews and interviews with writers and musicians to publications including Necessary Fiction, the Los Angeles Review of Books, and The Rumpus. As well as the Loyola Writing Institute, he has taught creative writing at San Francisco State University and the ADVANCE Camp for Young Scholars in Natchitoches, Louisiana.
