Description

SELF-COMPASSION AND PERSONAL NARRATIVE: WRITING YOUR LIFE WITH GREATER COMPASSION

Time: Saturday, July 15 from 10am - 4pm

Instructor: Lara Naughton

Location: The NOCCA Institute annex, 2832 Royal Street

Tuition: $125

Writing about your life can be challenging. It can be painful to write about a personal experience, or feel threatening to look at it from a new perspective. In writing personal narratives, we often face our sadness, anger, and remorse, and our judgments can make it difficult to write about ourselves as full-bodied “characters.” Applying self-compassion in the writing process can help us explore personal subject matter with courage and honesty.

This writing retreat combines a series of writing prompts with self-compassion cultivation practices in order to help you explore the stories of your life. In a relaxed and supportive environment, you will participate in exercises designed to increase your capacity for mindfulness and self-compassion, and you will have ample time to generate new writing.

A light lunch will be provided. However, participants are free to bring their own. There is a refrigerator on site, and a microwave, too.

REQUIREMENTS

This retreat is open to all. However, it will be especially helpful for writers working on personal narrative/memoir, or for writers interested in creating more rounded, multi-dimensional characters. Enrollment is limited to adults age 18 and older.

NOTE

A minimum number of students must enroll in this class for it to "make". If fewer students enroll than are necessary, the class will be cancelled and full refunds will be issued. If we have to cancel the class, we'll make every effort to notify students at least one week before the first class meeting.
