Summer Music Workshops

About this event

MN JazzEd presents Summer Music Workshops, including 3 stand-alone day-long workshops, taking place 10am-2:30pm Monday, July 25, Wednesday, July 27 and Friday July 29 at High School for Recording Arts. Each day will have a different artistic focus, led by leading professional artists from the Twin Cities and beyond!

Sign up for one workshop or all three. Open to musicians grades 7-12. Workshops are free for all participants, lunch provided. Registration required.

Jazz Combo Workshop - Monday, July 25

This is a jazz combo workshop for intermediate to advanced high school players. Spend the day in master classes, theory sessions and jazz combos. Work with the Twin Cities’ finest professional musicians, Claudia Medina (saxophones), Omar Abdulkarim (trumpet), Jordan Anderson (piano), Chris Smith (bass), Abinnet Berhanu (drums).

Songwriting Workshop - Wednesday, July 27

This hands-on songwriting camp is for young artists who want to learn to write songs and develop their artistic voices. Workshop leaders Sarah M. Greer (singer-songwriter, improviser, recording artist and performer) and Chadwick “Niles” Phillips (rapper, entrepreneur, event producer, composer) will share tools and techniques to help you start writing your own songs right away. We will start with the basics and learn and explore together.

This workshop is suitable for teens who like music, spoken word and/or poetry; who are comfortable talking and presenting (playing/singing) in a group setting; and who have basic rhythm and pitch skills. Previous experience songwriting is NOT required. Each participant will receive personal attention and feedback.

Bass Workshop - Friday, July 29

Ever wanted to learn the electric bass? This camp is open to all young musicians with skills on any other instrument who want to give electric bass a try. The day will be filled with clinics by professional bass players, Chris Bates and Kenny Watson, with lots of hands-on learning and introductory bass techniques. Already play bass? Come and join us! We’ll have a place for you, with instruction to fit your level. Basses will be provided, but if you have access to a bass and amp, please bring it.
