Did you know we all have puppet power?!?
Julia Gartrell will guide campers in making scrap-tastic puppets, as they write and perform an original puppet show, to be presented at the end of the week.
Using papier mache, wood, simple sewing, and other hands-on materials and tools, we will work with a wide range of techniques in one fabulously creative week. From tiny finger puppets to larger-than-life parade-style creatures, we will cover the gamut of puppet styles. In addition to the puppets, we will make a fanciful and interactive set, design posters, and put on a great show!
Julia Gartrell is a Durham native and professional sculptor who uses wood, textiles, North Carolina clay, and found objects to interrogate material usage in traditional Appalachian craft. The reuse of materials and “making do” are central to her explorations. She holds a B.A. from Kalamazoo College and an MFA in sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design. She has exhibited nationally and internationally, and has participated in residencies at Ox-Bow School of Art in Michigan, Ifitry Artist’s Residency in Morocco (Africa), and most recently at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
Camper Expectations
We expect all campers to arrive well-rested, nourished, and ready to participate and have fun! All campers will demonstrate respect towards staff members, fellow campers, and themselves while at the Scrap Exchange. Campers are expected to be kind to others and follow simple instructions. Although we pride ourselves on offering creative programs for most children, we recognize that the Scrap Exchange’s Summer Camp program may not offer appropriate support for all children, especially those with special medical, physical, behavioral, or social needs.
Attendance at Summer Camp is contingent upon meeting these expectations. There will be no refunds issued for campers that are asked to leave the Scrap Exchange due to behavioral problems or disobeying these policies.
Refund Policy
All withdrawal requests must be made in writing. Payments lost due to withdrawal cannot be forwarded to the next year’s camps or other programming.
