Self-Portraits with Affirmations and Interests

Emma Adler and Jules Brendanawicz

Youth will draw a self-portrait and fill the background with affirmations and fun facts about themselves, as a way to practice self-love, recognize strengths, and share more about themselves.

(Optional) Gallery Walk and Share

Youth have the choice to leave their projects face up on the table for others to walk around and see what they've created. If they do not want to show their work, they can simply flip over the paper....

About this event

Hey Brooklyn kids and youth ages 10-24! Join the VNS Safe Pathways Summer Art Series! Each week, youth will engage in a different, fun, strength-based art activity, to improve their resiliency skills, while connecting with their peers. Oftentimes, the activities can double as coping skills youth can use in times of stress or crisis. The series is drop-in, meaning it isn’t mandatory to attend all 8 weeks. Youth can participate as desired! The art series is free for all and snacks, along with fun prizes, will be given out weekly!

Frequently asked questions

Who is VNS Health?

VNS Health is a healthcare organization that provides a range of services, including home care, hospice care, behavioral health support, and health plans. They serve individuals and families in NYC and surrounding areas, aiming to make healthcare accessible and meaningful for everyone they serve.

What is Safe Pathways?

The Safe Pathways program from VNS Health is a suicide prevention initiative focused on LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC youth at risk of suicide and self-harm. It aims to provide direct mental health services, and an array of trainings so that individuals, families, and community organizations can thrive.

Do I have to be a client of Safe Pathways to attend?

No! Art Club is open to any youth who are interested, not just Safe Pathways clients.

Do I have to participate in the activities?

No! None of the activities on our agenda are mandatory. Guests are welcome to come and listen to the discussions, without having to participate. We also offer alternative activities, such as coloring pages or free drawing, if the main activity is overwhelming or not of interest.

Do I have to attend all 8 weeks?

No! We understand that summers are busy, so Art Club is a drop-in series, meaning youth are welcome to come as little or as frequently as they would like. Missing any week does not mean you are unable to participate in the next week's activity.

Will there be food?

Yes! We will offer snacks and drinks to participants.
