Event description

Description

NOT YOUR STANDARD PLEIN AIR DRAWING CLASS
Eric Martin
6 sessions >> Saturdays, June 16–July 28
(no session July 7 due to the 4th of July holiday)
10am–1pm, First class will be held at SFAI’s Chestnut Street Campus, Studio 13; subsequent class locations will be announced at the conclusion of each class, $295

Some prior drawing experience is desirable, but not required. Please be aware we will be meeting at different sites for each class session. Students are expected to arrange their own transportation to each class location; carpools will also be arranged. Please travel light, bring your preferred media, and be prepared to draw during our first session. Sunscreen, water, and rugged shoes are recommended for all sessions.

In this class, we'll take up the artistic tradition of outdoor drawing in a variety of unusual locations around the Bay Area. Our emphasis will be on sites and spaces where man-made structures intersect with the natural landscape in ways that are visually alluring, whether because of contrast, unexpected dimension or scale, or unique spatial conditions.

We’ll enter, navigate, and draw these spaces from within (as opposed to viewing and recording from afar). We’ll realize drawings cleanly and quickly in order to maximize the opportunity to explore, experiment, and fortuitously capture unexpected relationships and compositions.

Sites will include a mix of natural, urban, and industrial locations. Potential sites include the SFAI roof (for our first session), the Sutro Baths ruin at Land’s End, one or more military batteries in the Presidio or Fort Baker, the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption in San Francisco, the Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland, and the former Alameda Naval Air Station.

An informal exhibition will be held on campus at SFAI during the final session.

FAQs

What materials (if any) will I need to bring to class?
Each course requires specific materials that we ask you bring to your first class session so you can get started making right away. Materials lists are available approximately two weeks prior to the course start date. Visit the SFAI website here, click on your course title, and then click on the blue "Materials List" link underneath the course dates. If you have any questions regarding materials, please contact Public Education Staff.

What are my transport/parking options getting to San Francisco Art Institute?
All classes, unless otherwise noted, meet at 800 Chestnut Street, between Jones and Leavenworth. You can find directions to campus on the SFAI website.

SFAI is located in a residential neighborhood, and free two-hour parking is available on all of the streets immediately surrounding the school. The two-hour restriction cuts off at 9 pm, so evening Public Education students do not need to move their car, unless you arrive prior to 7 pm.

SFAI is easily accessible via public transportation, with Muni bus lines #30 Stockton, #45 Union, and #47 Van Ness located within a few blocks of campus.

Where can I contact the organizer with any questions?
SFAI Public Education Staff are always happy to answer any questions you may have about the Public Education program, or our courses. We are in the office Monday-Friday from 9 am to 5 pm. Call us at: 415.749.4554 or e-mail: publiceducation@sfai.edu
