Suminagashi (Japanese Paper Marbling) for Beginners!

In this class you’ll learn how to make your own, beautiful, hand-marbled papers! “Suminagashi,” which literally means “Floating Ink,” in Japanese, is an ancient technique for printing on paper using only ink and water.

You will leave the class with the expertise to make your own beautiful marbled paper at home.

(Maximum class size – 8 students)


Class components:

  • Each student will receive personalized and individual attention

  • Instructor demonstrations

  • Short discussion about the history of paper marbling, including differences between Suminagasha and “Turkish” Ebru marbling techniques

  • Resource and reference materials included: handouts for published references and materials lists; Internet sources and links that provide videos for you to watch at home

  • Short discussion about paper and what makes a good paper for Suminagashi marbling!

  • Discussion and examples about what you can do with marbled paper

  • All materials are provided in the course fees

  • Take home all your beautiful marbled papers directly from class!


Class Requirements:

  • Minimum age for this class is 12

  • Please wear old clothing/shoes that you won’t mind getting paint and/or water on

About the Instructor – Cynthia Hinds

Recently retired, Cynthia was a university librarian for over 18 years on both coasts, and for several years taught high school and college freshman in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. She has an M.Ed in English Education, and an M.S. in Library and Information Science. Following in the footsteps of her mother and grandmother (who were both regionally known artists during their lifetimes), for many years she passionately pursued the following artistic endeavors: paper marbling (both Suminagashi and Ebru (“Turkish”) styles; classical western and Japanese bookbinding; the “Paper Arts”; the “Book Arts”; jewelry making, and design.

“beadorbit” is her overriding business for all of the above pursuits which includes a business selling vintage beads online.

For several years she has pursued intensive continuing education and coursework in bookbinding, paper marbling, and jewelry making with the following institutions:
