Description

Suicide Intervention and Substance Misuse: A Workshop for Clinicians

Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in America. Further, the dual diagnosis client presents with greater likelihood to engage in suicidal ideation. Contrary to historical conceptualizations of the prevalence of co-occurring disorders, the dual diagnosis client is not a rarity in clinical practice. Close to 30% of persons who suffer with Major Depression Disorder also evidence a Substance Use Disorder. In many cases, the comorbid presentation provides the practicing clinician with a complex array of symptoms that can mask and confound attempts to accurately capture the client’s current mental health status. This workshop will provide mental health and addiction counselors with valuable information and skills to better prepare them as they encounter persons who are more likely to engage in suicidal behavior. Suicide is largely preventable. Attendees will be offered an opportunity to practice suicide prevention and intervention techniques that have been demonstrated to be effective in reducing the likelihood of suicide.

Learning Objectives:

  • To review and analyze current prevalence data related suicide and substance misuse
  • To review and practice suicide prevention techniques.
  • To review and practice suicide intervention techniques.
  • To discuss working with suicidal risk within Substance Use Disorder treatment
