Speaker: Lou Dear, Comparative Literature, University of Glasgow

Title: Pacts:Queer/feminist science fiction and the future of the university in Scotland.


Pacts is a short story which draws on the tradition of queer/feminist science fiction in order to consider the future of the university and higher education in Scotland. Lou will adapt the short story form into a performance.


Lou Dear is a Research Associate and Tutor of Comparative Literature at the University of Glasgow. Lou's PhD in English and Comparative Literature was submitted in October 2017 and will be examined in January 2018. Lou is working on a number of publications on subjects ranging from postcolonial literature to international education. Selected publications include: 'The university as a branch plant industry’, Unsettling Eurocentrism in the Westernized University, Julie Crupples (ed.) Oxford: Routledge, 2018; 'The imperial university: what does it mean to participate and be included?’ Educational Futures and Fractures: Time and Space in the Neoliberal University, Maddie Breeze, Cristina Costa, Yvette Taylor (eds.), Palgrave Macmillan, 2018; ‘Epistemology and kinship: anti-colonial literary critiques of Westernised education’, The Abolition of the University Special Edition Journal, Open Library of the Humanities, 2017. Lou is collaborating on a number of projects including: editing a Special Edition journal (with Prof Martin Eve) for the Open Library of the Humanities, 2017; and the Royal Society of Edinburgh funded project Contested Identities: Cultural Dialogues Between Small Nations, which will result in a co-edited volume of essays with Prof Willy Maley and Prof Kathryn Crameri. Lou is working on a collection of queer/feminist short stories.
