Kerri Frangioso has been studying Sudden Oak Death in Big Sur as a Staff Research Associate for the Dave Rizzo Plant Pathology lab at UC Davis for over 10 years (http://ucanr.edu/sites/rizzolab/). Originally from Massachusetts she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science in 1997 and is mostly a self-taught ecologist who has set roots in Big Sur while studying a complex, aggressive, non-native plant pathogen. She helped establish a large ecological monitoring plot network in Big Sur during the summers of 2006 & 2007. Since that time there have been 2 major fires the burned portions of the plot network creating the perfect scenario to learn about fire ecology in Mediterranean ecosystems, and to explore the interactions of disease and fire which are currently shaping the landscape. Her true passion is to bring rigorous science to the people whose ecosystem she studies and to work with her community of Big Sur to learn how to live with fire.

We will hear about (roughly) the following:
  1. Phytophthora background: SOD history in California/Oregon; brief summary of genetic research; new findings and implications for different mating types now found in OR and possible native range in Vietnam.
  2.  California pathosystem: Bays: Big Sur plot network and findings from 2006-2007, amount of mortality, host density dependency, exacerbated fuel levels
  3. Basin Complex fire findings: redwoods, soil, fuels, reinvasion/ re-establishment of the pathogen in the burn area
  4. Long-term plot network: resprouting and recruitment
  5. Potential implications for Soberanes Fire, the double burn scenario, hypotheses, and future directions
  6. Management projects & techniques.
