Event description

Description

FPA of San Francisco’s NexGen chapter is excited to host their first major event of the year. Although NexGen is hosting, this event is intended to be a resource for ALL GROUPS within FPA, including Emerging Advisors, Outside Professionals, and Experienced Advisors creating a transition plan.

Please RSVP, as space is limited. For those who can’t make it, we will also broadcast this event live from our FPASFNexGen Twitter handle via Periscope. Please follow us on Twitter to be alerted of our event!

SUCCESSION PLANNING: LEARNING FROM OUR COMMUNITY

One of the most pressing issues in our industry today is the topic of Succession Planning. You’ve worked hard to get to your position, but if you’re wanting to ‘move up’ or ‘shift down,’ how can you ensure your next career transition will be a smooth one?

Whether you are a seasoned advisor creating an exit plan, an emerging advisor looking to purchase an existing business, or an aspiring employee looking for ownership in your current company, this event will help you learn from local professionals who have successfully initiated or completed their own transition plans.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT

This event will be structured as a Panel event where our moderators will help the audience get to know each of our experiences panelists and their stories. Specifically, we will spend time learning how they made their transition decisions, their pain points during the process, and what they wish they would have known during their own experiences.

Each of our 3 panelists have unique stores and perspectives, ranging far and wide, to offer different members of our FPA community.

Additionally, we plan to have several minutes for Q&A. Feel free to come prepared with your own questions or concerns for this portion of the event.

This is an informal event, so business casual attire is acceptable.

MEET YOUR PANELISTS

Tim Kochis, JD, MBA, CFP®: Founder at Kochis Global, a succession planning consulting firm in San Francisco, CA

Tim’s 40 plus year career in the financial planning industry has helped influence the way the industry is shaped today. Tim is a national thought leader in the world of succession planning. After successful careers in financial planning for large, corporate institutions, Tim co-founded and managed the wealth management firm, Kochis Fitz, which eventually merged with Quintile to become Aspiriant. He helped to accomplish that merger, without sacrificing core firm values and acted as CEO and then Chair of Aspiriant for several years until he stepped down and created Kochis Global, a firm dedicated to helping existing and emerging independent firms, particularly in the developing world, establish and perfect their business strategies and long term equity and management succession plans.

Tim is well-decorated in achievements within the financial planning world. Over his career, he has been given the highest awards from the Financial Planning Association, Charles Schwab, University of California at Berkeley, Barron’s, San Francisco Business Times, among many others. It is no surprise that Financial Planning magazine has named him (twice) as one of the profession’s ‘Movers and Shakers.’

Karla McAvoy, MBA, CFP®: Senior Financial Advisor, Principal, and Chief Compliance Officer at HC Financial, a fee-only financial planning firm in Lafayette, CA.

After a successful career in the technology industry, Karla shifted to the financial planning industry where she advises families, young professionals, widows, and couples nearing and in retirement.

Karla has a unique perspective on firm ownership, as she owns and manages her financial planning firm, along with two other owners and advisors.

Karla is an active member of both NAPFA (National Association of Personal Financial Advisors) and the FPA (Financial Planning Association) and was the 2014 Chair of the annual FPA Norcal Conference. She is also active in her community, volunteering time at her children’s schools, on the neighborhood Homeowner’s Association, and as a coach and volunteer for a variety of local sports leagues.

Brian Kozel, CFP®: Partner and Lead Advisor at North Berkeley Investment Partners, a fee-only financial planning firm in Berkeley, CA

After a successful start to his career in the accounting world, specifically working with alternative investments for a large mutual fund company, Brian returned to the Bay Area to work as a client associate at North Berkeley Investment Partners. Fast forward to today, Brian is now a partner within his firm, where he is an integral part of the leadership team, while helping his clients achieve their personal and financial goals.

Brian attended Santa Clara University and received his degree Finance and International Business. He is actively involved in giving back to the financial planning community, which includes serving on the Advisory Board at UC Berkeley’s Financial Planning Extension Program.
