Overview

For most organisations, identifying and retaining talent is a key to their continued growth and success. But with recruitment problems, companies increasingly are looking to develop and implement succession planning strategies as a way of ensuring highly qualified employees are recruited and developed to fill every strategic role within the company.

Succession planning is a systematic process where managers identify, assess and develop their staff to make sure they are ready to assume key roles within the company. Succession planning is one of the initiatives that many companies do not find the time to start until it is deemed to be too late – if organizations do not address succession planning now they may end up facing a crisis.

Organisations that understand the need to manage the development of their high performers are a step ahead of their competitors. The effort required to establish a development programme for future leaders is worthwhile because it creates a motivated and capable group of employees that are ready to move forward in the organisation when the need arises.
