Event description
Successful HSE Management Through Leading and Lagging Indicators

About this Event

This workshop will explore what some of the most successful organisations use when it comes to monitoring performance in terms of leading and lagging indicators. The program will also examine how to use such indicators to influence the culture of the organization and ensure employees are working towards a collective and common achievable goal.

Who should Attend

This course tailors for personnel with high level responsibilities for managing health and safety within their organisations. the following groups would benefit the most:

• Health, Safety and Environmental Professionals

• General and Operational Managers / Supervisors

Objectives

At the end of the course delegates should be able to demonstrate:

• An understanding of what are considered as leading and lagging indicators in health and safety

• An understanding of how traditional methods of measuring health and safety performance through the use of lagging Indicators could have negative effect on the organisation

• Be able to develop some key performance Indicators based on leading Indicators

• Understand how health and safety inventive at work should be based on more leading indicators

Scope

All too often organisations concentrate on measuring past results, outputs and outcomes. They do this because they are easy to measure and in most cases, are very accurate.

If we want to know how many near misses we have had this month, we simply count them. If we want to know how many accidents have occurred on the factory floor, we refer to the accident and incident log.

Now, imagine yourself driving by only looking into your rear view mirror the whole time! This will not prevent you from having accidents, in fact it is highly likely that another accident will take place. this is an example of looking at lagging indicators in health and safety.

An after-the-event measurement, essential for charting progress but useless when attempting to influence the future. Many organisations, unfortunately still have that outlook when it comes to monitoring health and safety performances.

Leading indicators are always more difficult to determine than lagging indicators, however they can generally provide a good indicator to future performance.

What has become clear over years of research is that a combination of leading and lagging indicators result in enhanced business performance overall. The reason for this is obvious; a lagging indicator without a lead indicator will give no indication as to how a result will be achieved and provide no early warnings about tracking towards a strategic goal.
