Description

This training will include multiple presenters from Whatcom County around the topic of Substance Use Disorder. The intended audience is service providers working with vulnerable individuals who may be currently engaging in drug or alcohol use or at-risk of becoming dependent upon those substances. Community members are also welcome to join us. The goal of this training is to cover basic topics around substance use and gain a better understanding of the services that are available to assist individuals struggling with their drug use. It will cover additional systems such as law enforcement and court proceedings to educate supporting professionals on how to help individuals navigate these processes. The day will cover the following topics:

  • Addiction as a Brain Disease

  • Substance Use Prevention and Wellness Promotion

  • Treatment for Addiction/Relapse Prevention and Recover Support

  • Co-occurring Disorders

  • The Bellingham Police Department's Current Experience with Local Drugs and Gangs

  • Legal Issues Associated with Drug Related Crimes

  • Overcoming Housing Challenges

We will also have the privilege of hearing the personal journey from someone who has experienced drug addiction and homeless.
