ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:

Dr. Thomas Marcotte is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Center Manager of both the HIV Neurobehavioral Research Center and Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research. He recently served as the Director of Mental Health for the UCSD Owen HIV Clinic, which serves 3,000 HIV patients, and as a Co-Director of CHARTER, a national multi-site study of the CNS impact of treatments for HIV. Dr. Marcotte received his B.A. from UCSD, M.A. from the University of Connecticut, Ph.D. in clinical psychology from CSPP-Los Angeles, and completed post-doctoral training in neuropsychology at UCSD.

Dr. Philip Sobolesky is a clinical chemistry fellow in the Pathology Department at the UC San Diego School of Medicine in the laboratory of Dr. Robert Fitzgerald. Dr. Sobolesky conducted postdoctoral studies and earned his Ph.D. in Biological and Biomedical Sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Joe Macchi is a corporate attorney at Duane Morris LLP, and represents emerging growth clients in a variety of industries including biotechnology, bioprocessing, and diagnostics. Mr. Macchi earned his J.D. from the University of San Diego School of Law and his B.S. in Business from the University of Southern California.

Ryan Smith is a patent attorney at Duane Morris LLP and represents clients in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and diagnostic industries. Dr. Smith earned his J.D. at the University of San Diego School of Law and his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of California at Berkeley. Dr. Smith is also the Chemistry and Law Chair of the San Diego Section of the American Chemical Society.


ABOUT THE PRESENTATIONS:

Dr. Marcotte will provide an update on recent findings regarding what is known about the relationship between automobile crashes and cannabis use in states that have legalized recreational use. He will also review challenges in determining cannabis related impairments in the field. Lastly, he will discuss the aims and methods being undertaken in a recently funded project examining the effects of acute cannabis use on driving performance, as well as its effects on current, and potentially new, field assessments.

Dr. Sobolesky will detail the development of a mass spectrometry assay to detect marijuana usage in breath, blood and oral fluid by LC-MS/MS. He will review the method development and discuss significant findings of the project.

Mr. Macchi will discuss recent California laws relating to cannabis sale and distribution.

Dr. Smith will be the moderator of this event.
