Description

In this seminar, study abroad administrators, faculty, and staff will learn about identifying security threats associated with study abroad programs and how to develop effective strategies to overcome them.

Following the Department of State format, subject matter experts will instruct participants on personal security issues, including current crime trends and how to reduce risks. Presenters will include experts who have planned for and managed emergency events involving overseas travelers, students and families; and through actual case studies discuss the many aspects of Study Abroad security not usually presented in handouts.

Topics covered include:

  • Overseas Personal Security Overview

  • Assessments

  • Sexual Assault Awareness

  • Environment, Living, and Transportation Hazards

  • Services Available through the Embassy and what to actually expect

  • Legal Issues

  • Cross-Cultural Awareness and Security

  • Crisis Management

Participants will have a unique opportunity to meet the professionals who provide routine and emergency services overseas. This course will not only help improve existing security measures, it will also help administrators create new, effective plans for the future.
