Students as Thinkers, Students as Writers (9-16): Preparing Students to Meet the Challenge of Academic Rigor and Civic Engagement

Facilitators: Divona Roy, Monique Lamphiere-Tamayoshi and Sarah Martin

Students have strong opinions and make arguments every day, yet they often struggle to provide concrete evidence from credible sources to validate their claims. Our students need to be prepared for the workloads and expectations of college classes, with the skills sought by employers, and able to participate in civic discourse. Skillful writing that raises awareness and employs a public voice will allow them to persuade, to entertain, to enrage, to engage, and to educate their audiences.

Whether you're a high school instructor wanting to better prepare your students for the college composition classroom, or a college instructor looking to support students in writing high-quality, source-based arguments, this interactive 3-day program will address your professional needs. Strategies and topics addressed will foster a classroom culture where students thrive as thinkers and writers.

Participants will explore writing as a foundational key to student academic success as they engage in:

• community building in the classroom

• writing to promote rigor, access and ownership

• critical thinking skills and routines

• writing to establish credibility and awareness of civic issues

• rhetorical reading and writing to advance an argument

socially and culturally responsive teaching practices

If we could institute only one change to make students more college ready, it should be to increase the amount and quality of writing students are expected to produce. (Educational Leadership, 2007)
