A Look at New Laws Addressing the Mental Health of Students and Creating Safe and Supportive School Climates in Texas

In 2019, the Texas 86th Legislature passed major legislation related to both student mental health and school safety.

  • What do these changes mean for students, families, school districts, community providers, and state agencies?

  • How can these new laws be used to ensure students have acces to the right types services and supports they need to keep them healthy, safe, and engaged in their learning?

During this webinar event, a policy team representing some of the state's leading mental health advocacy organizations will provide an overview of key state policy changes that were made during the 2019 state legislative session, including new laws that aim to:

  • Provide all students with safe, supportive, and trauma-informed school climates

  • Teach students about mental health, substance abuse, and buiding resiliency skills

  • Connect students to school or community mental health and substance abuse services when needed

  • Prevent and respond to concerning behaviors among students (including behaviors associated with trauma, emotional or mental health concerns, substance use, and suicide) in ways that keep students healthy, safe, and learning.

The webinar will also share ways families, educators, and community members can become engaged in the work of putting new laws into effective practice so all Texas students can attend schools that are safe and supportive.
