Student Empowerment at the 2013 COSEBOC Gathering
Thursday, April 25, 2013 at 8:00 AM - Friday, April 26, 2013 at 4:00 PM (CDT)
Greetings COSEBOC family, friends and colleagues,
The theme for the student conference will be "Reading for My Life". The theme is drawn from Dr. Alfred Tatum's book Reading for Their Life: (Re) Building the Textual Lineages of African American Adolescent Males. We want the young men who participate in this conference to see literacy as a way to build what Dr. Tatum calls “academic and personal resiliency inside and outside of school”.
Dr. Tatum has written extensively about this concept of “textual lineage” (which can be defined as a reading and writing autobiography). He states that we have to encourage African American males to connect with reading in effort to change the trajectory of their lives by defining who they are through their textual lineage.
Reading for Life–Student Empowerment will be powerful venue for our young men to express their textual lineage--- the texts that they have connected with, changed their lives and help them forge an identity. As educators, we have to be reminded that our quest to help our young men to be literate is about saving their lives and that we have to expose them to text that that they can access both intellectually and emotionally.
The student conference will provide opportunity for the young men to be engaged and network with each other. Additionally, the following activities have been planned for the youth participants:
- Literature Circles
- University of Illinois at Chicago College Tour
- Visiting the DuSable Museum of African American History
- A visit to and lunch at the Navy Pier
- A Gates Millennium Scholarship Workshop
The Reading for My Life–Student Empowerment at the 2013 COSEBOC Gathering will be conducted on the campuses of the Urban Prep Charter Academies, a charter member of the Coalition of Schools Educating Boys of Color, on Thursday, April 25 and Friday, April 26, 2013.
