Speaker: Joshua Gurlter Ph.D.

Topic: “Food Safety and Food Safety Research: Challenges in the 21st Century”

 Joshua Gurtler is a Category I research scientist at the Eastern Regional Research Center of the USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) in Wyndmoor, PA.  He conducted his undergraduate and M.S. work at Auburn University, specializing in food microbiology, and his Ph.D. and post-doctoral research in food microbiology at the University of Georgia.  Dr. Gurtler’s current work involves innovative interventions for the inactivation of Salmonella, E. coli O157:H7, enteric viruses and other foodborne pathogens in dried spices, fresh produce, crops and soil, and he is currently developing new antimicrobial washes for fresh fruits and vegetables.  Previous studies evaluated the behavior and elimination of Salmonella, E. coli O157:H7, Yersinia, Cronobacter sakazakii, and spoilage microorganisms in products such as liquid and shell eggs, infant formulas and cereals, and fruit juices.  Joshua has published 37 peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts, three book chapters, edited two book, and is currently editing a third book with Dr. Michael Doyle (Univ. GA).  Dr. Gurtler served on the graduate advisory committee for graduate students at Drexel University, Virginia Tech University and Delaware State University.  He has collaborative research grants with the University of Delaware, Ohio State University and Auburn University, from which he currently supervises a post-doctoral research virologist in Wyndmoor.  He is a 3-year presidential appointee to the International Association of Food Protection (IAFP) Annual Meeting Program Committee as well as the current IAFP Program Committee Chair (2014-2015).  Dr. Gurtler serves on the editorial boards of 6 scientific journals and reviews over 45 manuscripts annually. He has presented dozens of poster and oral technical research presentations or invited presentations in the U.S., Canada, China and Korea.  He is a member of the International Association for Food Protection (IAFP), and Phi Tau Sigma Honor Society for Food Science.  He resides with his wife and three children in Phoenixville, PA.
