Description

Join Mixolo, as always, with or without a plus-one, for a different kind of wine tour and tasting, and find out why The Vineyards at Dodon is disrupting everything we think we know about Maryland winemaking. Dodon knows the structure and texture of a wine, not to mention the overall quality, is dependent upon the structure and texture of the soil. They are first stewards of the soil, doing much of their work by hand, then makers of wine.

Dodon is a 555 acre working family farm, the largest in Anne Arundel County. The property was first purchased by the Steuart family from Nicholas Carroll in 1725 by Dr. George H. Steuart of Argaty, Perthshire, Scotland. Nine consecutive generations of Steuarts (now Pittmans) have since lived and worked at Dodon.

Our tour on a crisp November Sunday afternoon will begin with a true insider’s description and history of the property. We’ll take in the expansive vineyards, as the proprietors explain how they blend classical farming practices with modern technology to create a diverse, yet balanced ecosystem. Following a tour of the state-of-the-art cellar, the visit ends with a seated tasting of Dodon Rosé, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and South Slope and a discussion of the nuances of Dodon's terroir.

By the time we finish our tour and you taste your first wine, you'll be a sommelier in the making, evaluating their "living" soil's impact on the exquisitely complex flavors that Dodon wines present. Of course, we'll pair the wine with artisanal cheeses and snacks to maximize your impressiveness at your next gathering.

We'll meet proprietor, Polly Pittman. who grew up at Dodon when it was still a tobacco farm. After 16 years in Argentina, she decided to return home to her family farm. Polly and Tom Chroghan, her co-owner and winemaker, moved to Dodon in 2005 where they now work with her extended family to preserve the farm and produce their exceptional wines (by international standards!) that reflect the unique soil and site. Both Polly and Tom have enjoyed successful careers in public health and medicine, respectively.

If you’ve been to a fine restaurant, hotel or wine store in the Baltimore/Washington area, chances are Dodon selections are on the list.
