Event description

Description

Join Norwalk Housing Authority's Creative Coordinator Danielle Vinci and her team of student docents for a one hour walking tour of public art located on and around Washington Street in Norwalk's historic SoNo district.

Plan to arrive 15 minutes ahead of Tour One start time to allow plenty of time for parking. Parking is available in the Ironworks Garage, entrance across from the IMAX theater. Additional parking is available in the SoNo Pearl Garage and the Maritime Center Garage. Tour will take place "Shine or Drizzle." Our docents are so eager to share their knowledge.

Tour One

(Tour Two starts later in the day at 1:00 and meets at El Segundo Restaurant. See separate EventBrite listing to purchase tickets for Tour 2)

Meets at 50 Washington Street at 10:30 and takes one hour. The walk is on paved, flat sidewalks, with several short stairway entries to interior sites.

This docent led tour includes sculpture, paintings and murals by contemporary artists Carole Eisner, Reuben Nakian, Rachel Calemmo, Jahmane West and Brec Morgan. The tour includes work by WPA artist Justin Gruelle and includes a specially arranged viewing of seldom seen WPA murals by Kindred McLeary located inside the SoNo Post Office, behind closed doors. McCleary's murals are painted in a surrealist style that differentiates his work from the realism of Norwalk's other WPA artists.

Student docents have been busy studying the artworks on this tour and are eager to share their knowledge with participants.

After the tour, plan on having lunch at any of the splendid nearby restaurants in SoNo. Seafood, Mexican, bistro, and noodle options are available all within walking distance of 50 Washington Street.

The tour is sponsored by the Norwalk Arts Commission in partnership with the Norwalk Housing Authority After School Art Program. The ticket fee of $5 is donated to the Norwalk Historical Society.
