Stress management may be a valuable skill for adults, but for children and adolescents it may come down to survival. Research at Harvard University is among hundreds of studies citing the serious, permanent damage – as serious as changes to the brain’s architecture – caused by unbuffered exposure to extreme and/or prolonged stress in children.
Kathy Gittelman developed and piloted StressLess™ at Perkiomen Valley Middle School East in response to her students who reported anxiety and stress related to academic issues (tests, grades, getting called on in class, working in groups, etc.); friends, family or teacher issues; low self-confidence; and a desire for perfection.
Activities during the session include deep breathing, mindfulness, Progressive muscle relaxation, getting grounded and focused using movement and breath together, crafts and journaling. Students can discuss their issues and practice problem solving in a safe, supportive environment.
Open to children ages 11-18 Please dress comfortably. Hot chocolate, tea and mats are provided. Bring a blanket if you tend to get cold in air conditioning and a journal if you have one.
Sessions are free and open to the public. Donations to Pillars of Light and Love are accepted and appreciated, if your budget allows.
