About Strengthening Families

The Strengthening Families Program (SFP) is a family skills training intervention that provides Children’s Life Skills, Parenting Life Skills, and Family Life Skills sessions to strengthen parenting and family functioning. SFP is designed for “higher-risk families” with children birth-3, 3-5, 6-11 and 12-16 years old. SFP assumes and overcomes obstacles and resistance to learning new skills. This program has been delivered successfully to families with substance-involved parents or youth, behavioral problems, justice, mental health, and corrections involvement. The class focus for these trainings will be 12-16 years-old age group, however once trained you will be certified to deliver to all SFP age variants.

Program Contents

  • SFP sessions include all the critical core components of effective evidence-based parenting programs (CDC, 2008), including parent and child practice time in the family sessions learning positive interactions, communication, and effective discipline.
  • The parenting sessions review appropriate developmental expectations; teach parents to interact positively with children by showing enthusiasm and attention for good behavior and letting the child take the lead in play activities; increasing attention and praise for positive children's behaviors; using positive family communication skills, including active listening and reducing criticism and sarcasm; hold family meetings to improve order and organization; and teach effective and consistent discipline including reasonable and logical consequences and time-outs.
  • The children's skills training content includes communication skills to improve parents, peers, teacher relationships, hopes and dreams, resilience skills, problems solving, peer resistance, feeling identification, dealing with criticism, anger management, and coping skills.

Program Structure

  • Children ages 12-16
  • SFP consists of parenting skills, children's life skills, and family skills training courses taught together in 14 two hour long group sessions preceded by a meal that includes informal family practice time and group leader coaching. SFP was designed in 14 sessions to assure sufficient dosage to promote behavior change in high-risk families.
  • Parents and children meet separately for one hour to participate in the Parenting Skills and Children’s Life Skills class. They rejoin during the second hour to take part in the Family Life Skills class.
