Tuesday, April 25, 2017 - 6:30-8:30pm

Intended Audience: PT/PTA (Centrex Rehab & St. Therese staff only)

CE Hours: 2 Hours, Category 1 CE

Presenters: University of Minnesota Geriatric Residents

Marina Cheung, PT, DPT (at Augustana, Apple Valley)

Beth Anne Cooper, PT, DPT (at St. Therese, New Hope)

Course Description:

This 2-hour course will begin with discussion of evidence-based strength training principles. We will focus on important considerations in implementing resistance exercises including appropriate intensity when working with an older adult population. In the second hour, we will expand upon how to apply these strength training principles in core-specific exercises. Throughout, we will consider how to safely and effectively prescribe strengthening exercises in the setting of the various usual and pathological aging processes that older adults experience.

Objectives:

  1. Describe general guidelines for evidence-based strength training including description of repetitions, sets, movement quality, intensity, and other considerations.

  2. Consider usual and pathological aging processes that impact exercise prescription to allow safe and effective strengthening for older adults with a diversity of health issues and functional abilities.

  3. Understand how and when to modify exercise intensity for strengthening with older adults, and how to appropriately document exercises performed to improve consistency between therapists and within our own practice.

  4. Apply the evidence-based strength training principles to core-specific interventions with older adults.

  5. Explore core-specific strength exercises that can be easily and effectively used in physical therapy intervention for older adults.

You do not need to bring a ticket to the course with you.
