Event description

Description

Street Photography with Lana Blinderman & Michael T. Perkins
At a time when Seattle’s built environment is in flux, and whole city blocks are erased to make room for new development, documenting our city takes on an urgency and meaning unlike times of relative stability. Whether it is the architecture or the people who inhabit it, street photography helps us capture the things we love, hate or question about life in this city. In the long term, it creates a visual record of our experience, a witness to our lives and communities. If we don’t tell stories of our cities, who will? And how will our cities be remembered?

In this three-part course, you will learn from two street photographers with different styles. Lana Blinderman’s urban wandering photography concentrates on the built environment, with forays into odd experiences that arise from city living. Michael Perkins captures the experience of living moments as they fleetingly pass by into oblivion. Mike & Lana will share their approaches to street photography, their sources of inspiration, and their favorite shooting & editing techniques.

You will learn through lecture, practice and friendly critique, and will have an opportunity to showcase your work in a group slideshow during October Capitol Hill Art Walk at Blue Cone Studios. You will leave with new skills and inspiration to capture your neighborhood on whatever cameras you have on hand.

Learning Outcomes
Students will acquire new skills, intention, and techniques in capturing the street and built environment of their city and neighborhood.

Requirements
- Any working camera. (While the class will focus on shooting with a mobile phone and a DSLR, an absence of these should never stand between a photographer and creating new work.)
- Ability to bring digital or analog homework photographs to the 2nd & 3rd classes for critique & presentation.
- Snapseed mobile app (free download on App Store or Google Play.)

Cost
$150 per series, per student, plus ticket fee
We want to make this class available to all regardless of their financial situation. Pay-what-you-can pricing is available, based on overall enrollment. Please pay the full price if able so we can run the class, but don't hesitate to use the pay-what-you-can option if needed.
10% of the total proceeds will go to Blue Cone Studios
