Description

Marti Smith, OTR/L will be discussing how the brain and body develop in regards to social skills, motor planning, and being able to focus. She will be discussing how outside factors can influence development. We will discuss what behaviors can be symptomatic of developmental delays and what strategies work best for remediation. Learners should leave the discussion with confidence to observe children with a new lens and understanding of the reasoning behind certain behaviors and what simple strategies can help them.

Normal Development as it relates to OT function

Types of things that can interrupt or influence development

(Typical behaviors/concerns will be woven throughout the above discussions- such as: difficulty with attention, socializing, anxiety, body awareness, visual skills, etc.)

Emphasis on the sensory processing system and interpretation of information/stimulation

Remedial techniques will be woven throughout discussion as the topics arise.

Q&A/ Case Study opportunity

Marti graduated from Indiana University in 1996. She began her career in the public school system with PRN work in early intervention, home health, rehab, and long-term care. Her work experience developed her passion for finding creative and inexpensive ways to help a variety of diagnosis. In 2006 she converted a portion of her Austin, TX home to a therapy gym to provide access to equipment for her own daughter. In 2010, Dr. Perry asked Marti to collaborate with Child Trauma Academy and sensory component of the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics. Dr. Purvis and Dr. Cross then asked her to join the TCU team with training for the sensory component of TBRI. She then opened her doors to provide short-term consultation and intensive treatment for families struggling with special needs. Her current passion is helping children who display dysregulation from trauma, neglect, Autism, and unknown causes. Her courses provide ideas to keep treatment sessions innovative, interesting, and fun.

Marti is a Fellow with Child Trauma Academy and certified in TBRI, Therapeutic Listening, Interactive Metronome, CiSM, Athletic Training, and Massage Therapy.
